Open Christchurch 2023: He Puna Taimoana Architecture Tours
Event description
OPEN CHRISTCHURCH 2023: He Puna Taimoana
Architects: AW Architects & Select Contracts, 2020
Architecture Tours with Andrew Watson (AW Architects) & Mark Huxtable, landscape architect
Join Andrew Watson and Mark Huxtable to find out more about the design drivers behind He Puna Taimona. Learn about its role in rejuvenating New Brighton, how community engagement informed the building and how the cultural narrative has been woven through it. Hear about its adaptive design strategies for coastal inundation and sea level rise, and how the architecture, landscaping and materials respond to the unique challenges of being in a coastal environment.
A carved gateway marks the entrance to this New Brighton legacy project - an oasis protected from the easterly winds. This recreational area comprises saltwater hot pools, a sauna, steam room and plunge pool. As a catalyst build He Puna Taimona is set to activate both the connection between the suburb and its watery eastern edge, and the suburb of New Brighton to wider Christchurch. The coastal environment is acknowledged throughout the timber structure, materials and design. Find out more on the tour.
