OPEN CHRISTCHURCH 2024: Observatory & Biological Laboratory (now The Observatory Hotel) - Sunday
Event description
OPEN CHRISTCHURCH 2024: Observatory & Biological Laboratory (now The Observatory Hotel)
Architects: Benjamin Mountfort, 1896
Another example of Mountfort’s dedicated exploration of the Gothic Revival style, this late-career building was designed to house the equatorial telescope gifted to the College by James Townsend in 1871, and the Biological Laboratory. Yet what stands today is the result of a complete post-quake rebuild. Spare in detail, with a machicolated tower, its siting was strategic, ensuring that future buildings on campus were in the Gothic Revival style.
