OPEN EDITION - Workshop by Pavement Print Studio for Melbourne Design Week

Pavement Print Studio is a mobile screen-printing facility housed on a bicycle trailer, bringing collaborative printmaking directly into public space.

For Melbourne Design Week (MDW) 2026, and as part of the Brunswick Design District (BDD) ‘Open Studios - Design Behind Closed Doors’ program, the Studio sets up at MPavilion on RMIT’s Brunswick Campus for four days of booked Workshops, before then moving to Balam Balam Place for an Exhibition running through to the end of MDW. Both venues are key sites within the BDD.

OVERVIEW
Each session runs 2 hours 30 minutes and takes 8 participants through the full creative arc: from conversation and design, through stencil cutting, to printing and overprinting.

Two sessions run each day across all four workshop days; a morning session from 10am to 12:30pm, and an afternoon session from 1:30pm to 4pm.

The session is designed so that participants arrive with nothing and leave with a set of prints that are genuinely theirs — shaped by their decisions and layered with someone else's.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
During the workshops, participants work alongside Pavement Print Studio’s printers to create screen prints using water-based Permaset Aqua inks, with stencils laser cut from reclaimed paper. Working from simple visual prompts and modular grid templates, individual designs layer through overprinting with other participants’ work — producing compositions unanticipated. Everyone leaves with their own printed work to take home, while also contributing to something larger: as prints accumulate across the four days, they become part of a collective artwork that no single person could have made alone.

Each participant becomes a named collaborator and co-author of the final work, which is installed at Balam Balam Place as a large-scale exhibition piece. An opening event brings collaborators back together to see how everything fits.

Pavement Print Studio is operated by students, alumni and staff from the RMIT Associate Degree and Diploma of Graphic Design.

Workshops are free, booking is essential. Exhibition is free, no booking required.
