Open Studio for Children's Week

This Children’s Week, families are invited to spend a morning or afternoon exploring the Duldig Studio through artful play, storytelling and hands-on making.

Set among the sculpture garden and historic home of émigré modernist artists Karl Duldig and Slawa Horowitz-Duldig, this special two-hour program invites children and their families to discover the ways that art, language, culture and family traditions shape our lives and connect us to one another.

Inspired by this year's Children’s Week theme and Article 30 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, which recognises children’s right to use their own language, celebrate their culture and practise their religion, the program creates a welcoming space for children to explore cultural identity through creativity and play.

Across the afternoon, families can move between a series of creative activity stations, including:

• Drawing and creative making

• Clay modelling

• A sculpture hunt through the garden

• Storytelling and shared family stories

• A short tour of the Duldig Studio's heritage rooms

There is no need to sit still or follow a set itinerary. Families can move between activities at their own pace, discover something new, make something with their hands and enjoy the garden together.

The program has been designed as an intergenerational experience, encouraging children and adults to create, talk, play and discover together. Along the way, museum guides and staff will share stories from the Duldig family's remarkable journey from Vienna to Melbourne, introducing children to the objects, artworks and traditions that made their house a home.

After the activities, families are welcome to bring a picnic and stay to enjoy the sculpture garden.
