Event description

Join us on Saturday, September 7th, from 6-8 pm for the opening reception of Gee Horton's "Chapter 2: A Subtle Farewell to the Inner Child," part of the 2024 FotoFocus Biennial. This evocative exhibition delves into the artist's journey of healing and self-discovery, inspired by a transformative pilgrimage to Senegal. Horton's work intertwines personal experiences with the collective narratives of six middle-aged African American men, exploring themes of resilience, redemption, and identity.

"The Baobab Project," a central feature of the exhibition, employs photography, collage, and mixed media to depict the nuanced transition from youth to adulthood. Conceptually rooted in the symbolism of African Baobab trees, the project draws parallels to the modern-day barbershop as a space of empowerment within Black communities. Through dynamic installations and a collaborative short film with filmmaker Shay Nartker, visitors are invited to reflect on the enduring power of healing and the beauty of resilience.
