Our Warrior by Anthony Kelly

Mozart Hall: 30th July 2025 @ 7:30pm

Our Warrior is a 53-minute documentary about Aboriginal political activist Robbie Thorpe, a story of resistance across generations, the power of family, and the unrelenting struggle for justice in a country that remains in denial.

Robbie stands as part of a long line of Indigenous resistance to invasion. The film traces his childhood, family, and the emergence of his radical politics during the formative years of Black Power in Australia, including his apprenticeship in the 1970s under Dr. Bruce McGuinness. It explores his rise as one of Australia’s most controversial and uncompromising activists today.

The documentary examines Robbie’s political impact, how he sustains himself against immense odds, and those he has influenced. It uncovers how resistance and resilience are transmitted across generations and highlights the power of family. For over 35 years, Robbie has organized challenges to ongoing genocide, colonization, and assimilation, always working toward Indigenous economic and political independence. His high-profile High Court legal actions on genocide were broader than the Mabo case, shifting the national conversation and influencing Australia’s laws. His series of controversial political and cultural interventions have shaken both Indigenous and non-Indigenous people out of complacency.

Robbie remains a fierce and unrelenting advocate, outspoken and provocative, providing high-profile leadership while also quietly mentoring both Indigenous and non-Indigenous individuals. He stands unapologetically at the most radical edge of Indigenous politics.
