On March 25th at Balam Balam Place, Brunswick, we will be sharing dinner and screening Our Warrior: The Story of Robbie Thorpe, sharing his story of resistance, power and struggle for justice, with a panel/discussion at the end.

This event is a collaboration between Karu Collective, Congee Club and Anakbayan - diasporic groups for South Asian people, queer Asian community and Filipino youth, aiming to weave our stories and build solidarity with First Nations people on this continent.

We see this screening as an opportunity for our communities to learn about Indigenous sovereignty and history, interrogate our position and responsibility as settlers, and continue to think about how we can act in meaningful solidarity with First Peoples.

Come through !!

We acknowledge that this event is held on stolen Wurundjeri land, this always was and always will be Aboriginal land.

About the documentary:

Uncle Robbie Thorpe, a proud Krauatungalung (Gunaikurnai) and Djapwurrung (Gunditjmara) man stands as part of a long line of Indigenous resistance to invasion. This 53 minute documentary shows the making of this modern leader and tracks the resurgence of a powerful Black, Indigenous, anti-colonial movement that is currently reshaping the country.

Who is this event for?

Karu Collective are a collective of South Asian youth creating space to gather, connect and learn in safety and care for each other. We are anti-colonial, anti-supremacy, and interested in compassion based action - Karuṇā - which is where our name comes from.

Congee Club is a social club for Queer Asians run by Queer Asians in Naarm (Melbourne). We’re building a space for community to connect and celebrate our unique, intersectional identities.

Anakbayan Melbourne is a Filipino youth mass organisation fighting for National Democracy in the Philippines with a socialist perspective. It aims to participate in the liberation of the Filipino people from the shackles of the three basic problems of Philippine society, primarily US imperialism, as well as feudalism and bureaucrat capitalism.

We have free mob tix for any mob who want to join us. Our collectives are committed to building solidarity and ongoing relationships with our First Nations friends, mob are more than welcome to come through for this event.

All proceeds will go to fundraising for First Nations causes, primarily Crime Scene Australia & Camp Sovereignty.
