Event description

Date: Wednesday, February 28

Time: 6:00-8:00 p.m.

Location: Meet at Maclay Flat (Note: the Maclay one-lane bridge is currently closed. Use another route.)

Owls are seldom-seen residents of the night, inspiring wonder and awe. Take this special opportunity to walk in the dusk and dark with an owl expert looking and listening for owls. The Owl Research Institute’s Haley Madden will provide information about owl biology, habitats, and behaviors as well as tips on where and when to go owling on your own.

As night falls, hear the haunting calls of Great Horned Owls. Look for an elusive Great Grey, and keep your eyes and ears out for other species such as the Northern Saw-whet. Find out why Maclay Flat has such a diverse population of owls, how and when they feed, when they mate, and what they are communicating.

Instructor: Haley Madden grew up surrounded by the Coast Mountains around Vancouver, BC, which is where she first fell in love with exploring the outdoors. After getting her biology degree from the University of British Columbia, she got the chance to work on a study researching the Swainson’s Thrush, where she discovered a passion for field research. Haley is now a Field Technician with the Owl Research Institute.

What to Bring:

  • Warm clothes! Toe/hand warmers are a good idea
