Oxley Creek Common Bird Walk

Join us for a morning bird walk at one of the top bird spots in Magandjin! This event is free and open to LGBTQIA+ folks and allies of all birding experience levels.

📍 Meeting Spot: Oxley Creek Common is in the suburb of Rocklea and is well signposted from Sherwood Road. If approaching from the east (Ipswich Road side), pass the Rocklea Markets and turn left before the bridge crossing Oxley Creek. If approaching from the west (Sherwood side) turn right about 100 m after the bridge over Oxley Creek. Carpooling is encouraged!

Accessibility and Comfort:
Please wear comfortable walking shoes. Paths vary in difficulty and quality. Your hosts will discuss your options with you on the morning. Please reach out if you have specific access needs or concerns, or would like to see the route prior to the event.

About the Walk:

Just 7 km from the CBD, this 120 hectare floodplain and wetland system is an ecologically significant part of the Oxley Creek catchment. The Common is bounded by Oxley and Stable Swamp Creeks, creating rich habitat that supports remarkable bird diversity.

Despite its urban setting, one quarter of Australia’s native bird species have been spotted here. Apparently more than 227 species have been recorded to date. This month eBird users recorded up to 121 species.

Water, snacks, hat, sunscreen, bug protection, enclosed shoes, binoculars/camera, field guide or ID app.

Birdwatching is a beautiful way to slow down, connect with nature, and build community. As we appreciate the local avifauna, we also reflect on the histories of this land and our shared responsibilities in protecting it.
