Event description

Prescribing assistive technology (AT) for children is both rewarding and complex. Unlike adults, children are constantly growing, developing and changing – which means the equipment we prescribe needs to adapt with them, their families and their environments. A “shrink it down” approach doesn’t work; thoughtful, problem-solving clinical reasoning is key.

This interactive workshop is designed specifically for occupational therapists and physiotherapists working with children with moderate to complex needs. Together, we’ll explore:

  • What is the underlying problem we’re trying to solve?

  • A problem-solving approach to prescribing assistive technology for children

  • How to evaluate options to ensure the best match between child, family and environment demands

Using case studies and hands-on learning with equipment, participants will have the opportunity to practically apply these principles to real-world scenarios.

Assistive technology covered in this session will include manual wheelchairs, seating and activity chairs, strollers, walkers, standers and car seats. We’ll look closely at when and why to consider specialised paediatric equipment, how to set it up for function and participation, and what considerations are most important for children and their carers.

By the end of the session, you’ll leave with practical strategies, enhanced clinical reasoning skills and greater confidence in prescribing paediatric AT that supports children to live, learn and participate in the ways that matter most to them and their families.

Meet the Presenters:

 Kate Pain (GTK)

Kate Pain

Kate comes from an occupational therapy background, with two decades of experience in varied settings, specialising in wheelchair seating and positioning. She finds the evolution of power wheelchair alternate drive technology fascinating, and looks forward to exciting innovations becoming more readily available in power wheelchairs.

Kate really enjoys appointments with children who are trying out a wheelchair for the first time. She loves seeing the excitement in their eyes as they move independently for the first time – it’s contagious!

Kate also enjoys working with adults trialling a wheelchair for the first time, who have a lifetime of limiting perceptions about using a wheelchair, who then realise that the right equipment can amplify their abilities and enjoyment of life.

Nell Harvey (GTK)

With a rich history spanning diverse experiences, Nell brings a unique perspective to the team. Originally from the UK, Nell embarked on an adventurous journey around Australia in a campervan before settling on the Sunshine Coast. Prior to joining GTK, Nell set up the Coolum Women’s Shed and cared for her twin boys before beginning to work as a Paediatric Community OT.

At GTK, Nell finds her passion ignited by the boundless possibilities of Assistive Technology (AT) prescription. She is particularly thrilled by witnessing how technology continually evolves to enhance participation and skill development for individuals of all ages and abilities. Specialising in paediatric equipment, Nell revels in the discovery of innovative solutions that hold such promising applications in early intervention.

Ashish Isaac (GTK)

With extensive experience as a Physiotherapist, Ashish brings a strong clinical background in paediatrics to the GTK team. After completing a Master’s degree in Physiotherapy at the University of Sydney, he built a career across the health, fitness and paediatrics sectors before focusing on assistive technology.

At GTK, Ashish's passion lies in paediatric assistive technology prescription, where he finds great reward in helping children maximise their participation, comfort, and independence through tailored solutions.
