Pain through a predictive processing lens with Dr Mervyn Travers

This presentation takes a fresh look at pain through the lens of predictive processing. Predictive processing flips our understanding of how the nervous systems operates and provides a potential explanatory framework to guide clinical practice.

Central to this perspective is considering pain as a deeply personal, conscious experience. This means pain doesn’t live in the tissues, nor is it an output of the brain. Rather, pain sits somewhere in between, emerging from the delicate dance between sensory information and your predictions.

Bio:

Dr Merv Travers PhD is a physiotherapist and strength & conditioning coach based in Perth, Australia. His clinical background includes working in professional rugby, and he provides clinical consultation for athletes with complex and longstanding musculoskeletal conditions all over the world.

He is a Senior Research Scholar working in pain and exercise rehabilitation at The University of Notre Dame Australia. Merv’s teaching areas include anatomy, pain neuroscience and exercise rehabilitation. He teaches into Physiotherapy Masters programmes in both Australia and Europe, and he regularly presents nationally and internationally. He is the founder and director of Optimise rehab (https://www.optimiserehab.com/), a provider of high-quality evidence-based education and mentoring services for exercise and rehabilitation professionals.
