Description

Painting Water - Technical Foundations

4.5 hours; $195

Water can be one of the most beautiful - and most challenging - subjects to paint.

In this hands-on workshop, local artist Narelle Beaver shares clear, practical techniques to help you better understand what you’re seeing and how to translate it into a painting.

This session is designed for beginner to intermediate artists who enjoy painting coastal scenes and want to feel more confident tackling water.

You don’t need to be advanced, but some prior painting experience - such as mixing paint and using brushes -  is required. The workshop is taught in acrylics.

What You’ll Learn

By the end of the workshop, you’ll have a clearer understanding of how to observe and break down the key elements of a seascape - from sand, reflections and refractions to foam, movement, colour and light.

Narelle will guide you through four practical techniques you can take straight into your own art practice, including:

  • How to observe and breakdown the elements of water

  • Building convincing waves

  • Painting the shoreline

  • Capturing reflections on sand

How the Workshop Runs

This is a relaxed but technique-focused session in a small group setting. Narelle demonstrates each step before guiding you through hands-on practice, offering feedback, encouragement and practical suggestions along the way.

During the session, the group will take a short visit to the beach to practice observing the ocean, strengthening your ability to truly see and interpret what you later paint.

Rather than focusing on producing a polished final artwork, the emphasis is on building real skills you can continue to develop in your own work. The class will include:

  • Demonstration and practice of 4 separate aspects of painting water

  • Time for you to practice under my guidance and start your own seascape
