Palm Frond Basketry Workshop
Event description
Create traditional Water Carrying Baskets from your every-day palm fronds with local Gumbaynggirr Weaver Lilly Clegg
These baskets were used by mob all over the coast to carry water from one place to another. The lining of the frond sheath (the part that sticks to the tree) is waterproof to direct water down the trunk of the palm, and we have mase use of this for thousands of years
After a good soaking, the frond becomes soft like leather and able to be folded and stitched to become a water-tight vessel!
This is the easiest and quickest basketry technique, and a workshop favourite because you will always go home with a finished basket, and the sizes vary from teeny tiny, to massive!
The event will be out the back of Yarrawarra in our crafty (heated) undercover workshop space <3
Young Children will require supervision and/or assistance using sharp needles
We also LOVE donations of large palm fronds if you have Bangalow or alexander palms on your property, feel free to bring them along
