PANGHALINA
PanghalinaΒ brings together three of Australiaβs most compelling and innovative soloists to explore themes of sonic duality. A trio grounded in improvisation and experimentation,Β PanghalinaΒ is comprised of Helen Svoboda (voice, double bass), Bonnie Stewart (voice, drums, percussion) and Maria Moles (synth, drums, percussion). Each musician in the trio is an established composer and performer in their own right and has developed their own distinctive approach to sound, often using instrumental preparations and non-conventional techniques to extend their mastery on their given instrument.
The music shifts through moments of frenetic texture, morphing into hypnotic grooves and restless motifs. The unique instrumentation spawns a sonic patchwork of overlapping duos within the trio format, creating possibilities for various concentrated sound worlds to emerge; the dense carpet of rich textures and rhythms across two percussionists, enveloped by wordless gestures between the two ethereal vocals, glued together by the unity of high frequencies in the arco bass harmonics and synthesizer.
PanghalinaΒ is touring their debut album 'Lava' in early 2024, which will be released on Room40 on Feb 2.Β
Lava is an ode to the connections between sound, emotion and human experience, exploring the interplay of sonic duality. The overlapping duos within the trio framework brought forth uncharted possibilities, allowing each of us to weave our individuality into the improvisations.Β
The crafting of the record revealed the projectβs distinctiveness. With an instant resonance, we found ourselves drawn to this project - a canvas that allows various aspects within our artistic practices to flourish. The album encapsulates the dialogue between our spirits and the music, celebrating the alignment of artistic kinship.Β
Weβve named the album βLavaβ, drawing inspiration from the melding of our sounds that resonates with the characteristics of molten rock - its subdued, unhurried motion juxtaposed against its fiery core. Just as molten rock emerges from a terrestrial planet, our collaboration springs forth from a distinctive sonic realm that is exclusively our own
ESSENDON AIRPORT
βEssential illogic and quirked delight...one of the treasures of the postpunk eraβ
- Simon Reynolds
Essendon Airport began in Melbourne in 1979 as the duo of Robert Goodge on guitarΒ and David Chesworth on Wurlitzer electric piano, along with a home-made drumΒ machine bought from the Trading Post. Beginning life at the experimental Clifton Hill
Community Music Centre, Essendon Airport went on to perform in Melbourneβs newlyΒ emerging post-punk venues such as the Crystal Ballroom, Tiger Lounge and the TradeΒ Union Club in Sydney.Β
The duo released their EP 'Sonic Investigations Of The Trivial' in 1979 and joined withΒ Anne Cessna for the infectious 'Talking To Cleopatra' single in 1980. Gentle, inquisitiveΒ and subtly experimental, Essendon Airport were described by the UK's Melody MakerΒ magazine in 1981 as βthe vinyl equivalent of an attractive lisp.β
Essendon Airport described themselves as βattempting to combine many of the mostΒ facile and insipid kinds of music in a redeemingly dignified manner.βΒ
Essendon Airport later expanded to explore the possibilities of rhythm. First cameΒ classically-untrained drummer Paul Fletcher and saxophonist Ian Cox to form the fourΒ piece lineup heard on their only album βPalimpsestβ. With its dryly intoned vocals, flailingΒ polyrhythms and a post-modern fascination with appropriation and quotation, the albumΒ is an eccentric post-punk classic. After βPalimpsestβ, Essendon Airport added bassistΒ Barbara Hogarth and grew to become one of inner-city Melbourneβs premiere liveΒ outfits.
Β Disbanding in 1983, Goodge, Cox and Hogarth went on to form βIβm Talkingβ with singerΒ Kate Ceberano; Goodge also created the famed Yothu Yindi βTreatyβ remix with βFilthyΒ Lucreβ. Chesworth took a different direction pursuing music and art-based projects,Β including collaborations with artist Sonia Leber with sound and video works exhibited atΒ the Venice and Sydney Biennales.Β
Essendon Airport occasionally reform in their varying line-ups. For this performance,Β Robert and David are joined by their bassist Barbara Hogarth and the dulcet tones ofΒ pedal steel player Graham Lee [Triffids, KLFβs Chillout ] playing music from theirΒ minimalist phase.

ACCESSIBILITYΒ Eastmint is accessible via wheelchair through the non main entrance, there is a small sliding door frame that we can place a ramp over the top of. Please get in touch if you require this option. We regret we are unable to provide accessible toilet facilities at this time, although there is wheelchair access to the hand washing sink which is a private space. Closest accessible toilets located at the Peacock Hotel 150m away. There are no windows that are openable in the space but we will open the double doors between sets for airflow. The space is quite cavernous with high ceilings and is an un-renovated warehouse so not tightly sealed. We do not have our own HEPA filter but try to source one for gigs when we can. Please contact eastmintrecords@gmail.com if you require any other info
