Parallels 4: Sam Gill & Phillippa Murphy-Haste // Paul Cutlan & Andrew Robson

Parallels is a series of improvised duo gigs curated by saxophonist Sam Gill, each presenting two duos and culminating in an all-in quartet set.

DISCOUNTED SERIES PASS AVAILABLE HERE

For the fourth and final edition, the focus is on woodwinds and will feature four of Australia's most acclaimed improvising reeds players.

Sam Gill & Phillippa Murphy-Haste

Sam Gill - saxophones
Phillippa Murphy-Haste - clarinets & viola

Phillippa and Sam have been dipping into duo moments for almost a decade as members of Microfiche, and since 2023 they've been playing as a duo in their own right, including at the celebrated 2023 Inner West Jazz Festival.

Their music casts a wide stylistic net, in freely improvised sets that draw on their shared love of jazz, folk music, contemporary chamber music and meditative minimalism. Expect the stage to be strewn with woodwind instruments large and small, as well as a viola for good measure.

Paul Cutlan & Andrew Robson

Paul Cutlan - saxophones & clarinets
Andrew Robson - saxophones

Paul Cutlan & Andrew Robson have worked together in a diverse array of acclaimed creative groups for over two decades, including Ten Part Invention, Mara! quintet and big band, the saxophone quartets SNAP and Original Otto Orchestra, and Paul Cutlan's Coltrane Project.

They released their debut duo album 'Simpatico' in 2007. The duo says of the music: "All of the tracks on this disc were recorded in one afternoon, both of us in one big room making up music together. For improvising musicians this is as scary and as exhilarating as it gets. The music on this album is completely improvised or, if you like, it is a series of musical conversations. You don't rehearse conversations, you just have them!"
