Event description

Paris. The beauty. The grime. The colours and thoughts and songs and sounds and children and dogs. The taste of strawberries, the sky, first métro, last métro, the bells, the dreams …

The city of light, it seems, has its own plans for Jayne. Drawn there in an entirely unforeseen way, she finds herself in a vibrant and dizzying neighbourhood, living in a former monastery,  studying at a famous theatre school, falling in love with a Frenchman too beautiful to be real. She will forget her past and disappear into the culture if it kills her. And one strange night, it nearly does.

Jayne Tuttle is an author, performer and co-owner of The Bookshop at Queenscliff. She graduated from the Lecoq Theatre School in Paris in 2006. She has performed with the Sydney Theatre Company, The Rabble and in co-devised plays in Dublin, Paris, Berlin and Portugal.

John Bolton is an award-winning director, performer and teacher, and is currently an Associate Artist at the VCA. He graduated from Lecoq in 1979, and founded the John Bolton Theatre School.

The Show is a COVID-baby. When the promotional tour for Jayne's memoir - Paris or Die - was cancelled, she and John started to wonder.... what if they made something new? What if the book, set largely at the theatre school, went full-circle to become a theatre work directed and performed by Lecoq alumni?

This solo show, involving reading, physical theatre, storytelling and improvisation, was created behind closed doors, rehearsed with social distancing, masks and constantly changing rules. The book has been brought to life, its words plunged and explored to reveal the worlds behind them. The worlds of Paris, love, friendship, loss, art and passion. A story of writing, of living, and of theatre itself.

The Old Stone Hall is delighted to bring Paris or Die: The Show to Beechworth.
