Parkinson's Care and Treatment: The role of Duodopa and Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS)

Tailored for General Practitioners and Health Professionals, this seminar will delve into the treatment and advanced management of Parkinson’s disease focusing on Duodopa and Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS).

Presented by a panel of specialists in neurology and neurosurgery with expertise in movement disorders including Parkinson’s: Dr Ben Jonkers, Dr Joel Maamary and Dr Steven Tisch.

Expert presenters:

Dr Ben Jonker - Neurosurgeon

Dr Ben Jonker is dedicated to providing the highest level of compassionate patient care, offering quality care by collaborating with colleagues and pursuing the technical advancement in his field. Dr Jonker is an Australian neurosurgeon with expertise in brain and pituitary tumours, as well as stereotactic and functional neurosurgery. Ben has a particular interest in conditions treated with stereotactic and functional neurosurgery including trigeminal neuralgia, epilepsy, tremor and other movement disorders. He treats these with operative neurosurgery and stereotactic neurosurgical techniques including radiosurgery and MRI-guided focused ultrasound. He completed his fellowship subspecialty training in stereotactic and functional neurosurgery in Calgary, Canada and UCLA, Los Angeles. He is a board member of the Neurosurgical Society of Australasia and a Clinical Senior Lecturer at the University of Sydney. He consults in Sydney and Orange.

Dr Joel Maamary - Neurologist

Dr Joel Maamary is a neurologist and PhD Candidate at the St Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney. He has a Bachelor of Medicine & Bachelor of Surgery (Hons 1, University Medal) from the University of Notre Dame Australia. He completed his neurology training at The Royal Prince Alfred and St Vincent’s Hospitals in Sydney before undertaking a movement disorders fellowship under A/Prof Stephen Tisch at St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney.
He holds both clinical and research appointments across the St Vincent’s campus in addition to a VMO appointment at the Sydney and Sydney Eye Hospital. Joel has been the recipient of multiple scholarships and research grants. He is completing his PhD on the use of MRI guided focused ultrasound thalamotomy for individuals with focal hand dystonia and has an interest in translational research, novel therapeutics, neuro-ophthalmology, functional neurosurgery and the clinical utility of machine-based learning capabilities.

Dr Stephen Tisch - Neurologist

Dr Stephen Tisch is a neurologist with expertise in movement disorders, deep brain stimulation and MRI guided focussed ultrasound. Dr Tisch is a Consultant Neurologist and Head of Department of Neurology at St Vincent’s Hospital, Sydney.
Stephen graduated from the University of Tasmania in Medicine with first class honours. He completed a neurology residency at St Vincent’s, Sydney and the Mayo Clinic, Minnesota USA. He trained in movement disorders and deep brain stimulation (DBS) at the National Hospital for Neurology, with a PhD on pallidal DBS for dystonia from University College, London.
Dr Tisch is a Conjoint Senior Lecturer at UNSW. He is also an Adjunct Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Notre Dame Medical School. In 2017 he competed 6 months sabbatical at l’hopital Salpetriere Paris and studied MRI guided focussed ultrasound (MRgFUS) at two European centres. He has authored or co-authored over 50 peer-reviewed articles and two book chapters. He serves on the advisory committee for Parkinson’s NSW and Dystonia Network Australia and is the Treasurer of the Australian Movement Disorders Society.
