PARRAMATTA WOMEN’S SHED FAQs

Q: When is it on?

A: We meet on Wednesday nights, from 6:30pm - 8:30pm. Please arrive on time to start the tour of the space, however, you're welcome to leave early if needed.

Q: Where are you located?

A: We work out of the Bower's Parramatta Workshop, which is 1/4-14 Hunter St, Parramatta NSW 2150.

Q: How do I get there?

A: As the Bower is located in the Parramatta CBD. We're a five-minute walk from Parramatta train station.

If you're driving, outside The Bower is street parking, which is timed meter parking. There is 2-hour paid parking from 6-8pm, which is $1.50 per hour.

The Justice Precinct Carpark, accessible from Hunter Street, is located above The Bower. Parking is $9 up to 3 hours.

Westfield Parramatta is located nearby, which has free parking if you're parking under two hours.

Q: How much does it cost?

A: The women's shed is free. We're run by volunteers, using space kindly donated from The Bower.

Q: What do I need to bring?

A: You need your own PPE equipment. This means earmuffs, safety glasses, facemasks and covered shoes. Please also tie long hair back. We also have supplies we can lend you, but to be COVID-safe, we recommend you bring your own.

Here’s some we recommend:

Ear Muffs: https://www.bunnings.com.au/cr...

Safety glasses: https://www.bunnings.com.au/ey...

If you already wear glasses, you do not need additional safety glasses.

Q: Do I need to know woodworking already?

A: You don't need to be an expert woodworker to join, as we all learn from each other as we progress.

However, we find women who have had some experience using tools in the last few years enjoy their experience more, even if it's just a short course.

Several of our members started out taking the short woodworking courses offered by Bower which builds a great foundation. Check out their programs here:

https://bower.org.au/learn/

Q: What can I work on?

A: We have plenty of options! Generally, people work on their own projects and are expected to be somewhat self-guided on what they work on.

You can:

- work on your own projects for your personal use

- work on community projects (like possum boxes for bushfire impacted forests or street libraries).

- build items to donate to the Bower and they can find it a new home for it!

Q: Can I work with machinery like dropsaws on my first visit?

A: Visiting for the first time, you can get started with hand tools and drills and drivers. For larger machines like dropsaws, everyone must be trained and signed off by an experienced member of the Shed before using machinery.

Q: What is your COVID-safe policy?

A: If you’re feeling sick, please stay home and come back when you're feeling better.

We require all members to be double vaccinated
(and we'd encourage you to get your booster!)

Mask wearing is recommended to be courteous to others

Do your best to socially distance - try to keep at your workbench when not using tools

Try to limit sharing of tools. Sanitiser is available if you'd like to wipe down tools between use.

Q: I've got more questions!

Feel free to message our Facebook Page, or email us at parramatta.womens.shed@gmail.com.

Please note that the email is checked by volunteers, so please allow a few days for a response.

We're looking forward to seeing you join us!
