Join us on Sunday, 6 September 2026, at the State Equestrian Centre, Brigadoon, for Western Australia's Pass Wide & Slow Awareness Ride/Drive. Building on last year's inaugural event, where more than 70 riders braved cyclonic weather, Western Australia will host five Pass Wide & Slow Awareness Rides in 2026—the most of any Australian state—as part of this growing international road safety movement.

Founded in the United Kingdom in 2018, Pass Wide & Slow now spans six countries, united by one simple message: Slow Down. Pass Wide. Save Lives. Slowing to around 20 km/h and giving horses at least 2 metres of space helps protect vulnerable road users.

Supported by a Road Safety Community Initiatives Grant from the Road Safety Commission, the WA Horse Council is expanding the campaign through education, signage, community events and advocacy to improve safety for horses and all road users.

The Western Australian Horse Council (WAHC), established in 1984, is a volunteer-run organisation representing the interests of WA’s broad and diverse equine community across all disciplines and regions. It plays a critical role in advocating for horse welfare, safety, infrastructure, and the recognition of horses in legislation, planning, and government policy. WAHC works across all levels of government on issues including biosecurity, land use, road safety, emergency management, and animal welfare, while also championing continued access for horses on beaches, parks, roads, and within our communities. The Council reminds policymakers that the horse helped shape our nation—exploring new frontiers, carrying us to war, clearing and working the land, and transporting people and goods long before modern infrastructure. Today, WAHC honours that legacy by promoting responsible ownership, delivering education and large animal rescue training, and advocating for safer roads through initiatives such as the “Pass Wide and Slow” campaign, which educates both riders and drivers. Through public education, collaboration, and policy engagement, WAHC ensures that horses—and the people who work with, care for, and rely on them—remain visible, valued, and protected in Western Australia’s future.
