Patents101: A brief introduction to opportunity and risk

Christchurch is quickly gaining international recognition for its startup community. The city is packed with startups that are innovative, agile, and not afraid to disrupt the status quo. However, many of the founders are yet to experience the exciting and sometimes scary implications of the international patent system.

In this session, Jeremy will give an overview of the opportunities and risks presented by the international patent system. Jeremy will also introduce several tools that can help founders from Christchurch and beyond begin navigating these opportunities and risks.

About Dr Jeremy Robertson:

Jeremy is an Australian and New Zealand qualified patent attorney and Australian trade marks attorney. Based in Christchurch, Jeremy is a member of the Intellectual Property and Technology practice group at Dentons and provides patent services to a range of local and international clients. Jeremy is available to work with clients throughout the South Island and beyond.

Jeremy has an Honours degree and a PhD in mechanical engineering from the University of Canterbury. His PhD focused on active enhancement technology in transdermal drug delivery.

Before joining Dentons in 2023, Jeremy worked for over four years as an Intellectual Property Engineer at a large medical devices company in New Zealand. This experience provides Jeremy with an excellent understanding of the value of intellectual property strategy and how to effectively identify opportunities for patent protection.
