About the report

Despite their resourcefulness and resistance to injustice, victim-survivors of economic abuse often find themselves exhausted, disillusioned, frustrated, and poverty-stricken as they navigate inadequate and harmful pathways to financial recovery. There needs to be a better way.

Centring the experiences and solutions of victim-survivors of economic abuse, this report is an urgent call to disrupt and dismantle the obstacles victim survivors face and make critical, evidence-informed changes to create the pathways to financial security that they deserve.

This report outlines the financial security pathways and maps the financial recovery journey of  Illawarra-based victim-survivors of economic abuse in three specific cohorts:

  • Older women
  • Women with disabilities
  • Single mothers

Pathways to long-term financial security are brought to life by the words of victim-survivors and professionals who support them, starkly illustrating what is not working and highlighting existing enablers that can be amplified to improve financial security. The report makes a broad range of recommendations across government, community sector, health care and financial and essential services responsibility areas.

This project has been funded by CommBank Next Chapter Innovation, a program supporting innovative responses to financial abuse recovery.
