On Tuesday 20th October at the Red Mill Distillery, Rozelle, join Paul Bangay in conversation with Anthony Burke.

From one of Australia's most revered landscape designers comes a deeply personal and evocative new book: a diary of discovery and creation in the heart of the English countryside.

Red Mill is based in the historic White Bay Steelworks, just across from the inner-west icon, the White Bay Power Station. Red Mill makes small batches of high-quality Rum to age in a special barrel program, blended and bottled in their wonderful, industrial home. Visiting Red Mill is a chance to see the workings of an artisanal distillery, in the historic surrounds of this remarkable building. Refreshments available to purchase include wine, beer and a signature Red Mill cocktail. We look forward to welcoming you to this unique venue.

Attendees are asked to arrive at 6.30pm for a 7pm start. Seating is unallocated – another reason to arrive early to secure an optimal spot.

ABOUT THE BOOK

For decades, Paul Bangay has looked to the great gardens of England as both touchstone and inspiration - their structure and grandeur shaping his own celebrated work. In this intimate new volume, he finally finds a cottage in the Cotswolds ready for bold reinvention. What follows is the story of a new beginning: reimagining boundaries and axes, planting hedges and perennials, experimenting with structure and softness, and discovering, season by season, what thrives, what falters and what surprises.

Written in diary form, the book captures the daily rhythms of building a garden from scratch. Bangay reflects on the differences between English and Australian light, soil and climate; the discipline of working within centuries-old traditions; and the joy of watching a place evolve. Alongside the garden transformation runs the renovation of the cottage itself and the gradual process of becoming part of village life.

ABOUT PAUL BANGAY

For 30 years Paul Bangay has been designing classic, elegant and simple gardens. Widely regarded as the foremost garden designer in Australia today, Bangay's clients include a roster of the most prominent figures in business and culture. His extensive list of projects span private and public commissions in Australia and New Zealand, as well as further afield in Europe, North America and the West Indies.

Bangay holds a Bachelor of Applied Science (Horticulture) from the University of Melbourne. In 1994 he was granted a Melbourne Arts Centre travelling scholarship to further his study of landscape design in Europe and the Americas.

He won the Mobil Pegasus Award for the best contribution to the Melbourne International Festival of the Arts (1989). In 2001 Bangay was awarded the Centenary Medal for his contribution to public design projects. Bangay's distinctive approach has been featured in countless publications, and he is a sought-after guest on gardening and lifestyle programs. His first book was The Defined Garden in 1996; his most recent one was Big Garden Design in 2024.

ABOUT ANTHONY BURKE

Anthony Burke is a Professor of Architecture at the University of Technology Sydney, Honorary Fellow of the Australian Institute of Architects, and the expert host/presenter for Grand Designs Australia, Restoration Australia, Grand Designs Transformations, and Culture by Design  on ABC, and The Home Front and Anthony Burke’s By design on ABC Radio National. 

In 2012 he was co-creative director for the Australian Pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale, and directed the architecture symposium celebrating the 40th Anniversary of the Sydney Opera House with the Danish Cultural Ministry. He is a sought after host, local and international tour leader, and presenter on all things architectural across various media, on a range of contemporary topics with an endless fascination for the role of architecture in shaping our lives. 

A graduate of Columbia University, Anthony has held visiting professor positions at the Beijing Institute of Technology and Institute of Teknolgi, Bandung, and was an assistant professor at UC Berkeley from 2002-2007 before returning to Australia as an Associate Professor and subsequently Head of Architecture, and Associate Dean International in the faculty of Design, Architecture and Building at UTS from 2010-2020.
