Paul Bourke + the Lemurettes
Description
Inspired initially by the great British songwriters, McCartney & Lennon, Paul Weller, Morrissey & Marr, Paul picked up guitar as a teenager and taught himself to play. The rest, they say, is history. As a student, he played at all the pubs, in support of local bands, that used to be live venues in Sydney. He was the only solo act in the Sydney University Manning Bar band competition. Overseas, he has performed in London, including at venues in Denmark Street, Soho, which was once the mecca of British songwriting. In 2014, he released online a song, 'Scarface Mountain,' about the late Captain Paul McKay, an Australian soldier whose service in Afghanistan took a heavy toll on his wellbeing. At the invitation of Captain McKay's mother, Paul has performed 'Scarface Mountain' at St Peter's Cathedral, Adelaide, in support of veterans' charities, and at the Australian War Memorial. Paul Bourke considers himself a songwriter first and foremost. He focusses on songwriting as an efficient and effective vehicle to communicate ideas to his audience. He writes strong melodies, with interesting, relatively original chord progressions and arrangements. Overseas, he busked on the freezing streets of Sapporo, Japan, and has performed in London, including at venues in Denmark Street, Soho, once the mecca of British songwriting.
