If one international pianist represents the way to interpret the great Classical and Romantic piano concertos it’s Paul Lewis. His complete recordings of cycles by Beethoven and Schubert have given him the accolade of “one of the greatest pianists of our time” (The New York Times) and he is coming Concert Hall with enduring concertos by Mozart and Beethoven.
Accompanied by Australia’s most dynamic string quartet – and the first ever Australian string quartet to be signed to the venerable Deutsche Grammophon label – Orava Quartet, Lewis’s precision playing will be heard against the clarity of chamber arrangements of Mozart’s 1786 Piano Concerto No.23 in A Major K488 and Beethoven’s magnificent and beloved Piano Concerto No.5 'Emperor’.
Beethoven’s final piano concerto contains all of the composer’s highest and most triumphant hopes, as well as the unwieldy uncertainties plaguing him during the time of Emperor Napoleon's siege of Beethoven’s home city, Vienna, in May 1809. Amidst the heroism of this concerto, amidst the swagger, there is the absolutely mesmerising hushed second movement, with its deeply contemplative theme, and sparkling, delicate piano writing guaranteed to cast us all under a spell when heard live in the unbeatable acoustics of Snow Hall.
