The Pacific Risk Information System (PacRIS) is built upon a GeoNode infrastructure, which manages and catalogues geospatial hazard and risk data according to geospatial metadata industry standard. This system (PacRIS) currently hosts more than 700 datasets across 15 Pacific Island Countries (PIC’s) which range from satellite imagery to project-related asset and hazard data generated from Phase 1. Field surveys were also carried out in project countries to collect and validate detailed essential attributes for asset and hazard data that include buildings, utilities, roads and so forth. In particular, asset data provides the opportunity for updated and close to accurate information for disaster risk management.

Currently, PCRAFI Phase II is underway, with in-country field data collection a priority. OpenStreetMap (OSM) data, primarily buildings and roads, provides the opportunity for the project field surveyors to both orient themselves and build on existing datasets. Therefore there exists an opportunity for collaboration between OSM Fiji and PCRAFI II to map, update and leverage OSM data for project countries.

A series of mapathons are proposed to raise awareness regarding the utilisation of open data for disaster risk management and to rapidly digitise and update existing building and road data through OSM. Both editing and validation will be carried out to ensure timely dissemination for the project team once validated.

TARGET AUDIENCE

Targeted participants include, but is not limited to, students from the University of the South Pacific’s Geospatial Science programme, Fiji National University and industry practitioners interested in learning more about OpenStreetMap and the PCRAFI Project. An open invitation will be extended to regional participants, therefore the event will be a hybrid event.

Prefered audience include those who have OSM mapping experience and are currently at an intermediate to advanced level. Advanced mappers will be selected for validation training and activities.

By the end of the activity, participants should be able to:

Understand and appreciate the value of open data for disaster risk management, particularly risk insurance
Undertake digitization using visual interpretation
Utilise ID-Editor to add and edit data within OpenStreetMap
Determine quality digitizations through validation (Experienced Mappers)

HOSTING

This event is hosted by the PCRAFI Project at SPC and supported by OSM Fiji.

In-person attendees are requested to bring their own laptops, additionally these tickets provided are capped at 20 people.
