This workshop
This introductory (Basic) workshop runs over two consecutive Saturdays, and participants will need to attend both days in order to complete the workshop and gain the full benefit of the workshop.
The Alternatives to Violence Project
AVP is an international non-religious, not-for-profit volunteer organisation, based on 50 years of experience.
In Western Australia, the Alternatives to Violence Project WA (Inc) has run workshops since 1994.
The programme
We facilitate experiential workshops for members of the general community and inmates at various Western Australian prisons to assist participants in discovering new and creative ways of responding to conflict.
In a supportive and safe environment, participants explore strengths and skills within themselves that will enable them to deal with future conflict or potentially violent situations in a more constructive and pro-active manner.
Basic workshop
In a Basic Workshop, guided experiences and exercises focus on Affirmation, Communication, Co-operation, Community Building, Trust and Conflict Resolution.
Advanced workshop
Participants who complete a Basic workshop are invited to participate in a more in-depth Advanced Workshop in which themes such as Fear, Anger, Self-Control, Empathy, Power &Powerlessness and Forgiveness are explored.
Training for Facilitators (T4F) workshop and beyond
On completion of both Basic and Advanced level workshops, participants are invited to a third level workshop, where they may train to become facilitators to help with this valuable work in schools, prisons and the community. We call this level a Training for Facilitators (T4F).

- Do I need to attend both days?
Yes, the workshop runs over two consecutive Saturdays from 9.00 until 5.00 each day and you will need to attend both days.
- Is there a cost for the workshop?
All our facilitators are volunteers, but to help with catering and other costs associated with running the workshops, we charge a small fee of $120 or $60 concession.
- Can I potentially become a volunteer with AVP?
Yes, we have a series of three workshops: Basic, Advanced and Training for Facilitators (T4F), and once you have completed all three workshops, you may consider becoming a facilitator for future community or prison workshops. This will all be explained when you do your first Basic workshop.
- Will I get a certificate?
Yes you will get a certificate on completion of each of the three workshops.
- Are the workshops catered or do I need to bring my own food?
The workshops are fully catered for and we try to cater for all dietary requirements.
- Can I do the workshop just for my own personal development or do I have to continue and become a facilitator?
You can do the workshop for your own personal reasons. However, you will have the opportunity to potentially become a volunteer facilitator which can be very rewarding.
- Is there a concession for couples?
Yes, you and your partner or friend are welcome to attend the workshop at a cheaper price, but will each need to register separately.
- Where will the workshop take place?
This workshop will be held in Mount Lawley and the address will be forwarded to you on registration. If you need to know about the venue before registration, please contact us.
- When do I need to register by?
You need to register by Monday 29th June for this workshop. There is lots of preparation that has to go on behind the scenes, so we need final numbers by this date. It really helps with our planning if you register well before this date.
- I notice there is a booking fee. Is there another way to pay?
Yes there is a small fee, which goes to Humanitix for managing the site as well as donations to charities.
