Catherine Marciniak and Stephen Axford
In their Planet Fungi documentaries Stephen (presenter) and Catherine (writer, cinematographer, director) share the beauty and science of the Kingdom of Fungi. They document mushrooms in some of the most remote forests across the planet. They are fungi adventures investigating which mushrooms are edible and which are poisonous. They help identify species new to science, and they explore why scientists now think fungi is critical to life on this planet.
Stephen's images of mushrooms have been featured in leading science and nature magazines across the globe, and his time-lapses of fungi growing are in many documentaries, including Planet Earth 2, Fantastic Fungi, Hostile Planet, Our Planet, Kangaroo Valley and The Kingdom; how fungi made the earth. He even has a mushroom named after him Panaeolus axfordii. He has been invited to document the fungi in Nepal, India, China, Myanmar, Thailand, Mexico, and Chile, and of course, it is a constant obsession in the fungi hotspot of the NSW north coast and southern Queensland.
Catherine has had a successful international career as a documentary director and cinematographer. Until recently she was a senior features reporter at ABC North Coast but in retirement has focused on her passion for sharing the story of the extraordinary, beautiful, and sometimes bizarre world of mushrooms with Stephen Axford. She is an award-winning storyteller, including finalist in the 2019 Walkley Awards for excellence in journalism for her work on the documentary Leagueabilty.
"Fungi is a huge obsession that has changed our lives. We love the forms, colours and the endlessly fascinating diversity of fungi. We love being in the forest. And, we love that we are helping to document one of the largest kingdoms of life on the planet. This is a new frontier of scientific discovery."
