You are cordially invited to hear from two Australasian representatives involved in the Pedestrian Safety on Urban Arterials Global Benchmarking Program study.

The webinar “Pedestrian Safety on Urban Arterials: Learnings from Transportation Research Board in Washington DC” will take place on Friday 7th June 2024 at 12 noon – 1 pm (NZST).

In 2021 the US Federal Highway Administration selected Australasia for their Global Benchmarking Program study on Pedestrian Safety on Urban Arterials given the pedestrian fatality rates per population decreased in New Zealand and Australia between 2010 and 2021 while they climbed dramatically in the U.S. The study team visited Auckland and Sydney and following their research publication in 2023 offered to cover costs for representatives from Auckland Transport, NZ Transport Agency and Transport for NSW to join them at the Transportation Research Board meeting in Washington D.C in January 2024 to share the findings of this research.

Hear from two of the Australasian representatives involved in this study, Ping Sim and Bernard Carlon, on the key findings from the research and what we learnt from an Australasian perspective through this information exchange. The research identified that movement and place frameworks, road safety audits as a process and systematic speed management were key factors underpinning Australasian safety performance for pedestrians. Learn more about the tools used in Auckland and Sydney to address pedestrian safety and take part in a question and answer session with the speakers.

Speakers:

Ping Sim is currently the Transport Safety Technical Lead at Auckland Transport. She leads strategic Safe System thinking and advice and the delivery of key engagements that grow understanding of an evidence-based approach to lifting road safety performance. She is a member of the Executive Committee of the NZ Chapter of the Australasian College of Road Safety. She has more than 15 years’ experience in transport planning, demand management and road safety and holds a Master in Planning Practice (Hons) from Auckland University.

Bernard Carlon is currently the Chief, Centre's for Road Safety and Maritime Safety. Bernard joined Transport for NSW in 2012 as the Director, Strategy and Policy and has led the Centre for Road Safety since 2015 and Maritime Safety since 2016. He is a board member of ANCAP, a member of the Austroads Safety Taskforce, and a member of the National Level Crossing Committee. Bernard has previously worked in Health, Police and Environment sectors at the executive level in policy, communications, program delivery and regulation.
