About The Host
Sam O'Connell, Penfolds Ambassador
Sam has grown up with Penfolds in his blood – with family members working for the business for the last 25+ years. Spending much of his childhood at Magill Estate, he was destined to one day be part of the Penfolds team.
Beginning his Penfolds career in 2015, Sam worked as a Cellar Hand overseeing the day-to-day operations of vintage at the historical Magill Estate property. This included procuring Penfolds handcrafted wines – subsequently Sam’s love of wine began.
His passion and interest for wine grew as he commenced at the redeveloped Cellar Door in 2015 once vintage had concluded. Here, Sam hosted historical tours of Magill Estate for guests from around the world, alongside guided masterclasses and tastings of Penfolds prolific portfolio of wines.
For seven years at the Cellar Door, Sam worked closely with the Penfolds winemaking team as he pursued his passion and interest in all things wine and viticulture. Sam joined Penfolds Winemakers at both the 2018 and 2022 Re-corking Clinics across Australia, meeting collectors and discussing the history of their beloved wines. Sam also worked alongside the winemaking team at the renowned Penfolds Rewards of Patience tasting in 2019, where he developed an in depth understanding of Penfolds museum collection of wines, and a fantastic insight from wine critics and winemakers alike.
Sam was appointed a Penfolds Ambassador in 2022 and quickly travelled across Australia to support Penfolds Victoria Derby Day and the Melbourne Cup Carnival at Flemington and the Penfolds Restaurant at the Australian Open 2023. Sam will also oversee management of the recorking machine at Penfolds Re-corking clinics globally.
His wine education has also been pursued through formal study, having completed his Wine Spirits Education Trust Level 2 and 3 qualification.
Sam continues to be passionate about Penfolds and enjoys sharing his knowledge with individuals across the globe.
