Artist Statement
2390 days ago, I visited Costa Rica and started drinking pour-over coffee.
1666 days ago, during COVID-19 lock down, I started making pour-over coffee every morning.
766 days ago, I lived in Hong Kong and made coffee.
764 days ago, I arrived in Adelaide and made coffee.
Today, I make coffee here.
Coffee-making has become a daily presence-making ritual for me. The seemingly ordinary everyday routine has revealed to be inherently beautiful and meaningful, where I exist in a different time and space … however fleeting.
If you encounter me making coffee, I aspire for you to also experience this revelation — of a horizon where we are beings, being-in-the-world.
The Process
- The process will take around 4 minutes.
- It will be silence. Participants shall make themselves comfortable and relax, standing or sitting (if there is a bench or seats available), breath, see, listen and smell.
- Participants can move around to see, listen or smell at a different angle.
Artist Sharing
- Depending on audient’s response, the sharing session may take 10-15 minutes.
- Coffee can be served during the sharing session if participants wish to have a small cup of coffee. I will bring glasses with me.
- I make coffee every morning and now we are sharing the moment together.
- I consider the filter paper as an archive of this very moment, that “history” is being created together during this process and it is recorded on the filter papers.
- Previously, audients shared their experience of making coffee or having coffee with family members, and how they felt about the durational performance.
