ABOUT THE FILM
ECOLOGICAL DESIGN : Inventing The Future (1994) is an educational documentary film which illuminates the emergence of ecological design in the 20th century. The film features the ideas and prototypes of pioneering designers who have trail-blazed the development of sustainable architecture, cities, energy systems, transport and industry.
Beginning in the 1920's with the work of R. Buckminister Fuller, moving throiugh the 1960's and the Counter Culture and ending on the doorstep of the 21st century: the film follows the evolution of ecological design from the visions of a few independent thinkers to the powerful movement it is becoming.
WHO IS IN THE FILM
Ecological Design features the interdisciplinary perspectives of many noted designers and thinkers, including:
- Jay Baldwin
- Mary Catherine Bateson
- John Todd
- Stewart Brand
- Amory Lovins
- Paolo Soleri, among many others.
As each designer leads us on a deep exploration of their design process, they reveal their methods, metaphors, inspirations, and commitment to a vision of a desirable future. Their prototypes range from microorganism to megastructure, but amidst the diversity a number of common themes emerge, including design as a way of life, designing with nature, regenerative design, creating new forms of wealth, the biosphere and the technosphere.
A provocative educational tool, Ecological Design provides a practical basis for learning about the environment and about our capability to design a desirable and sustainable future.
Duration: 64 Minutes

GUEST: CHRISTOPHER ZELOV
Christopher Zelov is an ecological designer, educator, film-maker and author. The book accompanying this film is Design Outlaws On The Ecological Frontier.
Morag was excited to learn too that Christopher knew iconic Landscape Architect Ian McHarg (1920-2001) one of the most influential people in the early environmental movement, who brought environmental concerns into broad public awareness and ecological planning methods into the mainstream of landscape architecture, city planning and public policy. McHarg's book Design With Nature and overlay method of design, inspired permaculture. Reading Design with Nature inspired Morag to study Landscape Architecture when she left school - which she has used to underpin her permaculture design and education work.
Christopher will be joining Morag for the second session (from the United States) and happy to be in conversation with those in the zoom room.
