Permaculture design is all about considering natural patterns in; our landscape, relationships, climate, plants and animals. It is multidimensional. It asks “where is the best place to put xyz, so that it reduces my workload by working with natural patterns?”. It can help us decide what we need to add and to discern wisely about what probably won't work.

To begin with we look at what’s there – our base maps. Bring your base map so that we can add on more information. It would be wonderful if you’ve made a start on your inventory, that is a list of what's on your property (or diagrams, however you want to capture information and display). It’s a good time to record what you would like to see on your property – what do you dream about?

In this workshop we will be further exploring what’s happening on our properties by looking at; the climate of our bioregion and sectors. This helps with the questions “Where do I put things?”

Permaculture zones will be introduced, they can help us to see our property from a different perspective and guide our designs.

Lastly we move on to the Analysis of elements and look for how things connect.

This workshop will be a mix of listening, sharing, working in small groups and working by yourself. It hopes to have something for everyone!

Meet the Facilitators:

Tan Fowler

Relatively new to town, Tan lives on an 8 acre property in Julimar. She started her journey into Permaculture when she was studying biological science at University. Since then she has worked on farms across Australia, run her own organic farm with café onsite, had twin daughters, clocked up a range of certificates and postgraduate study and spent countless hours volunteering in community groups.

Tan is passionate about creating and making possible new ways of living in a beneficial relationship with nature. She aims to raise awareness of living systems and regenerative culture; the practices, philosophy and theory, in her business Living Abundance. It is her hope to inspire and empower individuals, groups and the community to make lifestyle changes, and join a growing, diverse movement of people worldwide actively participating in exploring slow solutions.

Nicole Coleman

Nicole (Fossick Farm Permaculture) lives with her husband and three children on ten acres in West Toodyay. They have been on their property for six years and have utilised the ethics and principles of permaculture to develop the acreage in a way that aims to work WITH nature, rather than against it. Everyone on the property has an important role to play, from the dairy goats right down to the smallest guinea pig. Nicole loves to grow and cook food from scratch, but her real joy is in animal care – once you get her talking about goats, she may not stop!
