Event description
⭐️⭐️ ONLINE TICKET SALES CLOSED. Door sales available by EFTPOS/CASH⭐️⭐️
Permaisuri: The Gaysian Empress Rises is an interdisciplinary music and performance art project by electronic artist, singer and DJ, Dyan Tai. Drawing on their background as a trilingual, Malaysian-born, Chinese-Australian artist, the show will explore queer identity and the diasporic migrant experience in Australia.
Accompanied by immersive projection art by Juune Lee, Permaisuri highlights Tai’s signature use of Asiatic soundscapes and Chinese operatic drag; intersected with glitchy, hyperpop and breakcore club samples as an ode to queer nightlife. Featuring original compositions from Tai, Permaisuri is a joyous celebration of culture and community that marks the culmination of Tai’s work as a trailblazer in Sydney’s music, arts and cabaret scene.
Permaisuri features a cast of East/Southeast Asian excellence:
- Accompanied by Chloe Chung (dizi 笛子, classical Chinese flute), Risako (movement artist)
- Supporting artists Putrika, Maggie Tra and DJ Fried Pork Chop.
- Mentored by Shaun Parker; supported by The Red Rattler Theatre and Inner West Council.
“A queer, euphoric fever dream that you don’t want to wake up from.” The Age
“Tai’s a joyous performer, celebrating their multiplicitous cultures and communities with an infectious energy,” NME
“Dyan is serving such a broad and sophisticated palette pop and hyper pop on their tracks” The Rolling Stone
