If you’re a photography enthusiast looking for something a little different — something that gets you out of the house, camera in hand, and creatively recharged — then this Perth Laneways Portrait Walk is for you.
We’re heading into the laneways for an afternoon of relaxed shooting, real-world learning, and the rare opportunity to photograph live models on location in some of the city’s most visually interesting spots.
From the heritage façades of King Street to the bold colours and textures of Wolf Lane, Perth’s West End is full of hidden gems just waiting to be turned into backdrops. We’ll be using the streets themselves as our studio — shifting between soft shadow, bounced light, open spaces, and narrow alleys — and learning to see how natural light behaves in all kinds of urban environments.
The big draw here is that you’ll get to shoot portraits of real models at each location. Whether you want to practise natural candid looks, more stylised street portraits, or simply explore how light wraps around a human face in a laneway — you’ll have time and space to do it. It’s a golden chance to add something unique to your portfolio, without the pressure of a formal setup.
This isn’t a workshop, and it’s not about theory. It’s about getting out, shooting hands-on, and discovering how to make quick creative decisions on the move. You’ll pick up tips by doing, by watching, and by talking with other passionate photographers along the way. You’ll come away with better images and a better understanding of what makes them work.
You can use any image capturing device, including smartphones, but to get the most out of the walk, you’ll need a camera with interchangeable lenses (DSLR or mirrorless), and a 24–70mm or 24–105mm lens is ideal. These give you the flexibility to capture everything from wide urban scenes to tighter portrait compositions — perfect for this kind of dynamic, on-the-go shoot.
If you’ve been itching to try your hand at portrait photography outside the usual setting, or you just want a reason to spend a few creative hours with fellow camera lovers, this walk is calling your name. Come get inspired, shoot in a new way, and see just how much beauty Perth’s backstreets can offer when you’ve got a model, good light, and your lens pointed in the right direction.
Places are limited to 15 photographers, so don't miss out.
