NZIA Peter Beaven Memorial Lecture 2023
Event description
The Canterbury provincial Buildings situated on the banks of the Otakaro between Armagh, Gloucester and Durham Streets are one of the highlights of Christchurchs architectural Heritage and are the only surviving provincial government buildings in the country. Designed by Benjamin Mountfort and built in timber and stone in the Gothic Revival style, these buildings are unique in their display of architectural construction and detailing. Yet they lie in wait in need of attention after they suffered significant damage in the February 2011 earthquake.
These buildings where know to have inspired Beaven's work, with Beaven in 1995 till the February 2011 Quake situating his studio in a tiny upstairs office in the 1858 wing of the buildings. It is Beavens passion for these buildings that brings us to this discussion in his memory. The post earthquake work on these buildings to date has focused on stabilising and weatherproofing this fantastic cluster of structures for future restoration and use, what may that be? and is now the time to make it happen? Join is for discussion of what the future of these buildings may look like.
