Event description

Luluc are an Australian band, based in Brooklyn, New York consisting of singer/songwriter Zoe Randell and multi-instrumentalist Steve Hassett.

Emerging from the Melbourne scene in the 2010’s, Luluc’s sparse folk-noir debut Dear Hamlyn drew many high-profile international fans and tours, and they signed to the legendary US label Sub Pop Records for their follow up; 2014’s Passerby. Produced with Aaron Dessner (The National) in their adopted home of Brooklyn, NY, Passerby made various ‘year-end’ lists and was NPR Music USA’s #1 album of 2014.

Their 2018 release Sculptor (Sub Pop) was again broadly lauded by the international music press while they toured extensively in the USA, Canada, Australia, UK and Europe. Mojo observed that "Sculptor yields centre-stage to Randell's haiku-like celebrations of human spirit and suburban transcendence".

Luluc's Dreamboat (2020) was described by The New Yorker as “crystalline and unflappable, with a strange beauty that verges on creepy—it's the kind of voice that, on a movie soundtrack, portends unspeakable doom".

Luluc's latest album, Diamonds (2023) was described by All Music's Timothy Monger as "...one of their most complete statements to date. With her distinctive low voice and unhurried pace, Randell is a master at describing the underlooked details of life, bringing to them a richness and sense of wonder. Each album in the band's catalogue is a gem and Diamonds, with its dream-like tone and bouquet of lived-in stories, is perhaps their brightest."

(Luluc is pronounced Lou-Luke)

DIAMONDS (2023) Press quotes

Uncut UK "Zoë Randell's low reverberant voice, like Nico fronting Morphine. This is, though, an album of upbeat rebirth, born from considered reflection." (on 2023's 'Diamonds' )

Mojo UK "Randell's voice is so crystalline, so deadpan it's spooky...see this as Townes Van Zandt were he refracted through the lens of Mazzy Star".

AllMusic USA "Each album in the band's catalog is a gem and Diamonds, with its dream-like tone and bouquet of lived-in stories, is perhaps their brightest."

Record Collector "Melodic, majestic, and delightfully mysterious, Diamonds is a towering achievement."
