Philosophy Cafe - Self-deception and Wilful Ignorance
Event description
Join us for this months Philosophy Cafe exploring self-deception and wilful ignorance. Two puzzling attitudes which show that our relationship to beliefs and ignorance is not always straightforward. Both comprise claims of ignorance which others find difficult to accept. Both are paradoxical. They elicit the questions:
How can I deceive myself when it is me who is both deceiver and deceived?
How can I be ignorant of a situation which I wilfully avoid?
Join Margaret Penhall-Jones who will share how some key philosophers proposed to answers these questions.
Margaret is an alumna of Adelaide University, where she was awarded her MPhil in Philosophy in 2022. She is now studying for her doctorate at Deakin University.
Margaret’s interests include epistemology, phenomenology and Existentialism. She is particularly interested in our individual, everyday knowledge-seeking, and claims of belief and ignorance, including those that are sometimes difficult for others to accept.
