Event description

The First year of the James Webb Telescope

The Jame Webb Telescope is revealing parts of our universe that have never been seen before. Dramatic and beautiful images are continually being produced of planets, environments around black holes, nebulae and stars located in every corner of the universe. These images are leading to new and exciting insights. It has observed water in the atmosphere of planets orbiting distant stars that raises the prospect of life on distant worlds. It has studied the dynamics around black holes, and the nature of stars in the early universe. This presentation will cover these topics, and much more, with time for your questions and my answers.

The Jame Webb Telescope is revealing parts of our universe that have never been seen before. Dramatic and beautiful images are continually being produced of unprecedented clarity. Planets, stars, nebulae, colliding galaxies and much more have now been observed during the first year of operation of this large infrared space telescope. The images it has produced are leading to new and exciting insights. The telescope has observed water in the atmosphere of planets orbiting distant stars that raises the prospect of life beyond Earth. It has studied the dynamics around black holes, and the nature of the first stars in the universe. This presentation will cover these topics, and more. It will be a feast of wonderful images and fascinating science.

Presented by Dr Paul Payne, with over 30 years experience in communicating astronomy and physics to the general public. The presentation will be in stereoscopic, interactive 3D. Powerful visualisations will aid in explaining all the concepts that are explored during the evening.

The evening will also be complemented with refreshments, and viewings through a telescope of the night sky, weather permitting.

The event is held at Woodford Academy in the Blue Mountains. Parking available on Vale Rd, accessed via Woodford Ave from either direction of the Great Western Hwy. Woodford train station is a 10 minute walk away.
