Botany workshop at Bundoora Park Farm

Come and learn the fundamentals of botany and practical plant identification with ecologist and farmer Mikey at Bundoora Park Farm.

This hands on workshop introduces the science behind plants how they grow, reproduce, and are classified while building the skills needed to recognise and name plants in the landscape. You’ll explore the basics of plant anatomy, life cycles, and taxonomy, and learn how botanists use observable features such as leaves, stems, flowers, and growth habits to identify different plant groups.

By the end of the session, you’ll leave with a clearer understanding of plant science and classification, the names of local native plants, practical identification techniques, and a collection of resources to support your learning beyond the workshop. Most importantly, you’ll gain a deeper connection to the plants growing around you every day.

Mikey will guide participants through the farm, encouraging you to slow down, observe closely, and share any plants you already recognise. This walk will be followed by an engaging talk on plant botany and identification, with a focus on key diagnostic features and examples from common plant families such as Asteraceae (daisies), Solanaceae (nightshades), and Poaceae (grasses).

Participants will also be provided with simple materials to draw a plant of their choosing. Through guided observation and basic botanical drawing techniques, you’ll learn how sketching can sharpen your ability to notice fine details a valuable tool for both plant identification and deepening your understanding of plant form.

The ticket price includes a snack with coffee and tea on the farm.
