Plant me Instead Workshop

Join Council Officers and Edendale Nursery Staff for a free event designed to help Nillumbik community members identify common environmental weeds and discover beautiful, local native alternatives. Whether you're new to gardening or a seasoned green thumb, this event offers practical tips and expert advice to support healthier backyards and bushland.

Learn how to identify and manage weeds on your property, how invasive species spread both within the garden and into bushland areas, and how we can safely dispose of weeds in your backyard. You will also discover some amazing alternative native species to plant instead of the common weeds that we find in our gardens and properties, and how to identify the difference between weeds and their native look-alikes!

Walk away with inspiration, and a local native you can plant in your garden, hopefully to replace a weed!

Yvonne Allred is an Environmental Project Officer at Nillumbik Shire Council who oversees their Rivers to Ranges program, which aims to bring various organisations together to manage weeds across Nillumbik Shire.

Rowena Groundwater is an Edendale Nursery Officer who has worked in local bush crews for over a decade controlling weeds to protect indigenous flora in remnant bushland. After transitioning through horticultural studies, she joined the Edendale nursery team in 2018 working with the public to encourage the use of local indigenous plants in gardens.
