Community Wetland Planting Day at Ōtanerua Reserve, Hatfields Beach
Event description
Community Wetland Planting Day – Ōtanerua Reserve
Saturday 10 August | 10am–1pm
Meet at the reserve entrance, 19–21 Ōtanerua Road
Ōtanerua Reserve is a hidden gem – a beautiful area of native bush, rich in birdlife and home to an amazing variety of native plants. With a stream along the boundary and classified as a Significant Ecological Area, it’s a special place well worth protecting.
Since 2021, Restore Hibiscus & Bays has been supporting a dedicated local community group who’ve made great progress tackling invasive weeds like climbing asparagus, jasmine, Japanese honeysuckle, monkey apple, and massive wattle trees.Over the past two years, hundreds of native trees and grasses have been planted to restore habitat, extend the bush, and stabilise the stream banks — and the work continues!
This year, we’ll be planting 900 native plants:- In the front area of the reserve (formerly a grassy bog dominated by a giant wattle)- Along the riparian (streamside) zone to improve habitat and water quality
Come along for a few hours of meaningful work in a stunning spot — it’s a great way to enjoy the outdoors, connect with others, and make a real difference for our environment. You’ll be most welcome!
