Platypus Planting Day
Event description
We are hosting a community planting day on a tributary to the West Moorabool River to protect and enhance critical Platypus habitat and discuss the threats and conservation of this iconic Australian animal.
In May 2021 MCLG members undertook Platypus surveys throughout the waterways of the Moorabool Catchment using an innovative technology known as Environmental DNA (eDNA). eDNA involves taking a water sample from a waterway, which is then screened for Platypus DNA fragments back in the lab. The results of these surveys show us that there is Platypus in the West Moorabool River.
We're inviting you to a community planting day along the West Moorabool River, which we now know thanks to MCLG volunteers is critical Platypus habitat.
The planting day will also include a discussion on Platypus conservation in the Moorabool Catchment and what the community can do to help our local Platypus populations. Through community engagement we will ensure the preservation and enhancement of vital Platypus habitat for generations to come and enhance the native vegetation cover in our landscape.
No prior experience is needed, and all are welcome. Morning tea will be supplied on the day.
This project is proudly supported by funding from the NAB Foundation.
