Play On presents: Three Conversations
Event description
This October, classical music night Play On presents violinist Kyla Matsuura-Miller in a program of new commissions for violin and electronics by Australian composers Sia Ahmad, Aaron Wyatt and Kitty Xiao.
Growing up playing classical music in Australia, Kyla Matsuura-Miller rarely came across music by composers who looked like her. When she won one of Australia’s top music prizes in 2021 – the Freedman Fellowship – she decided to use the prize money to commission three Australian composers of colour to write new music for her to perform.
Hear the premiere of these captivating new Australian classical works and then hear from the composers themselves. Each of the new works will be paired with a filmed interview between Matsuura-Miller and the composer. Created by film-makers KEWL studios (MIFF, 2018), these illuminating and deeply personal interviews explore the experience of growing up in the world of classical music in Australia as a person of colour.
