Summer Holiday - Playful Art and Mark Making Workshop

Through each playful session, participants are encouraged to find freedom and energy within their creative ideas and expression, as they explore a range of methods and materials. Within each session (as outlined below), students will work to create a personal outcome, as well as contribute to shared creations! Both of which they will be able to take home, or collect once dry. These classes will be a safe and welcoming space for all participants of any creative experience.

Workshop Details
Materials and Morning Tea Provided, $50 per session. Workshops stand on their own, so participants may attend any or all sessions. Each session will run from 9am to 12pm at the Ashburton Community Centre, High St Ashburton.

Workshop 1: 17/01/24: Make a Mess: Participants will work freely with paint on both paper and a communal canvas design - exploring scribbles, stamping and various mark making techniques. Students will reflect on their mark making, and the textures they were able to create, using this discussion to guide a final creation.

Workshop 2: 19/01/24: Still Life Drawing: Playing with perspective, participants will draw aspects of a still life setup, over various time segments, as they explore elements like texture, shape & contrast. Combining these learnings, students will have access to various materials like watercolour, pencil and oil to work on piece’s for longer time periods. Participants will take home these outcomes:)

Workshop 3: 22/01/24: Exploring Sense and Time: Various Natural artefacts, like bark and leaves will be revealed and hidden to act as drawn references. Participants will be encouraged to use their imagination and wonder to depict elements of these artefacts. Inspired by this exploration, we will be guided by our imaginative learnings to guide our own individual piece on thick cards.

This workshop will be run by Gretel Tobin, a local visual artist and nature lover. Intrigued by the intricacies of living things, and how they form, move and interact within their environment, Gretel weave’s together observations of shape and form; playfully using line, texture and tone within applications of photography, illustration and design. Gretel has broad experience working with children through volunteer lifesaving, babysitting and a current study of Outdoor Education. She has a valid working WWC, First Aid Qualifications and recent Police Checks.
