Event description

Playful Early Years of School

Welcoming Children to School through Playful Pedagogy

Mini Course - 1.5 days
Facilitated by Lisa Burman

This Mini Course is a re-branded/re-configured version of the previous "Playful Transition to School".

Registrations close 6pm Wednesday 18 January 2023.

During the early years of primary school, a child learns SO much. Not the least, they develop a learning identity - as someone who is a learner or someone who feels they aren't good at it. They learn what school is about and form ideas about whether it is a place they like to be - or not.

In this mini-course, we ask, "Are schools really making themselves ready to welcome the young children and their families?"

This interactive mini-course will explore:

- A competent, strengths-based image of the child and what this means for our pedagogical decisions.

- The characteristics of a playful pedagogy and the kinds of playful learning contexts we can create for children to learn and grow.

- The importance of wellbeing and attachment to supporting children in making successful transitions.

- The role of executive functions and learning dispositions in learning and how these are developed through play.

- How literacy and numeracy goals can be achieved through a playful pedagogical stance.

Session 1 will focus on creating a playful learning environment and supporting transition in the first weeks of school. Join us to be inspired and supported to imagine and plan for the learning spaces you'll create to welcome children and families the following week!
