    About Poems for Peace

Poems for Peace is a global initiative that SICA, the cultural arm of Subud, began in 2012 in response to an appeal by Peace One Day's founder, Jeremy Gilley. The appeal was to join a coalition of NGOs around the world working with Interpeace, in support of Peace One Day, to celebrate the United Nations International Day of Peace.

SICA joined that coalition with "Poems for Peace".

Since then, Poems for Peace® programs have been hosted in more than 14 countries. In cities including London, Rome, Auckland, Freiberg, LA, Vancouver and now Brisbane. Over a million people have been involved. And in Austin, Texas, where Poems for Peace began, SICA has been honored by the City and Poems for Peace Day has been officially proclaimed by the Mayor.

Artists featuring in Poems for Peace

    Daphne Alexopoulou

Daphne Alexopoulou is a poet and artist. She grew up in 1960s Athens, Greece. In 1977 Daphne travelled to London to study weaving at the Hammersmith College of Art and has since lived in the USA, Greece and Australia. Daphne regularly reads at spoken word events, live online poetry events, and charitable events like Poems for Peace. https://daphnealexopoulou.com

    Anisa Nandaula
Originally from Uganda, Anisa is a published poet and has toured the country with her debut poetry collection Melanin Garden. Reni Pavlova-Bojilov and Ann Bermingham
Reni and Ann have been singing together for many years. Reni is originally from Bulgaria and Ann is Australian. They rely solely on the perfect interweaving of their combined voices to create soaring solos and spine-tingling harmonies, telling universal stories of love, longing and everyday life. It has been said that to hear Bulgarian singing is to drink from magic waters, which can quench our thirst for beauty. Since their first rehearsal in 2001, Reni and Ann have been evolving a presentation that honours the authentic music of Bulgaria, while also celebrating its continuing life and relevance in 21st century Australia and the world.

    Amado Guerra Lopera – Guitarist
Originally from Ecuador and now a recent arrival in Brisbane with his young family, Amado brings his formal study of music and his highly eclectic and incisive style of acoustic guitar playing. Amado also teaches guitar styles based on his many influences as a guitarist, singer and songwriter.

The Stowaway Collective – World music
Arash Zanganeh, Sebastian Flynn, Martin Reese, Christian Rizzalli and Chris Clarkson bring interpretations of traditional music from near and far, drawing upon their individual influences. Their highly original sound features their own compositions with a rich combination of fiddle, pipes, flute, bouzouki, banjo, mandolin, shruti box and assorted Middle Eastern percussion. Their influences include music from Irish, British, American, European, Balkan and Middle Eastern traditions. Previous performances include Woodford Folk Festival, Dorrigo Folk Festival and Sandgate Music by the Sea.
