Pohuehue to Puhoi 2025
Event description
This is a walk with lots of different terrain and some stunning views. Starting at the lower end of Moirs Hill Road we walk through bush for about twenty minutes until we arrive at Tolhopf Road/Ahuroa Road intersection. We then cross the road and pass through a rural subdivision, over an old airstrip, then towards the top we enter Dunn’s Bush ridge track. This is a stunning piece of native bush lovingly restored by the late Arthur Dunn.
At Sugarloaf we will pause for a drink, a snack and a photo opportunity before continuing on through farmland following orange markers until we arrive at Reminger/Ahuroa Road intersection.
Here we get our first look at a newish section of the Te Araroa National Walkway. This part of the walk is about 5km. Somewhere along the new walkway we will stop for another drink and snack break, perhaps overlooking the Puhoi Cheese Factory.
The walk previously crossed a swing bridge which was washed away in early 2023. Access across the Puhoi River is now a stream crossing across rocks. It’s possible that we may get wet feet at this point. The walkway continues up through recently cut-over pine forest to a wide diversity of native bush along with some grassy sections with great views when we reach the ridge overlooking Puhoi. From here it is down to the historic Puhoi Village and the Puhoi Pub for a relaxing pizza lunch and drink.
This is a Grade 5 walk so you need to be very fit and have good strong footwear. Walking poles are strongly recommended.
