POP VOICE DAY: DEVELOPMENTS IN SINGING POP

Pop is a broad and ever-evolving genre. In 2023, performing popular repertoire encompasses many new artistic models and technology.This exciting new session provides an overview of approaching popular vocal styles in teaching, learning, and performing while showcasing the integration of technology tools including looping, in-ear monitors, singer tech setups, and more.

Join us as we explore the timeless elements that have propelled performers and singers since the 1960s while uncovering the exciting developments in vocal modeling and technology being utilised in 2023. This immersive event will provide voice teachers with invaluable insights into emerging trends, ensuring they stay ahead of the curve in today's dynamic music industry. Don't miss out on this transformative opportunity to enhance your teaching approach and guide your students to success. Professor Irene Bartlett from Griffith University, independent pop artist performer Kitty Rae, and artist/producer Jordie Tomas are invited to contribute to the three sessions starting at 10am.

ABOUT OUR PRESENTERS

Dr. Irene Bartlett - Coordinator of Contemporary Voice, Head of Pedagogy and Jazz/Vocal studies at Griffith University Queensland. Irene supervises postgraduate, doctoral and undergraduate students. Recognized internationally as a leader in the field of contemporary commercial music (CCM) styles and vocal pedagogy, Irene presents public workshops and speaker/keynote presentations at national and international conferences and symposia. She is a past master teacher for ANATS and has been a visiting lecturer to national and international voice training institutions including: the Sydney Conservatorium, University of Tasmania, Central Queensland University, University of Otago (NZ), Massey University (NZ), National Academy of Singing and Dramatic Arts (NASDA, NZ), the New Zealand Singing School., Berklee College of Music (USA), Shenandoah University (USA), University of Applied Science and the Sibelius Academy (Finland). As both an independent artist and featured vocalist in small combo, big band and cabaret, Irene has enjoyed an extensive career singing across the full range of contemporary styles. This lived experience informs her ongoing research and teaching practice and is reflected in her extensive publications - as a featured contributor for international publications “So You Want To Sing CCM (Contemporary Commercial Music): A Guide for Performers”, “Training Contemporary Commercial Singers” and “Vocal Studies for the Contemporary Singer”. Irene provided the voice coaching for the Warner & Universal film “Elvis” (2022).

Kitty Rae - Kitty Rae (she/they) is a pink-haired, dark electropop artist whose vulnerability and authenticity as an artist is captivating a growing worldwide audience who connect with her message of unapologetically being yourself. Reminiscent of Halsey, Lorde and Billie Eilish, they’ve gained over 18K+ followers and over 80K streams worldwide. In the past 12 months, their work has premiered on JOYFM’s The Sound of Now, won a Top Song award from Real Songwriters of Melbourne and made the semi-finals at the 2023 International Songwriting Competition. They’ve featured at festivals including Brunswick Music Festival, The Push All Ages Tour, Moomba Festival and supported acts like King Stingray, Teenage Dads, Eliza + The Delusionals and D’Arcy Spiller. All of Kitty’s catalogue has been self-written and produced by Kitty and partner Ryan Mangold in their home studio. Kitty’s anticipated debut album ‘Lightning Strikes’ is arriving on September  8th 2023  exploring breaking free from society’s expectations and experiencing the emotional journey to self-empowerment.

Jordie Tomas - Jordie Tomas is an Australian pop musician, having over half a million streams on Spotify alone, and a global audience. He is also well known for his leading role in ABC's BAFTA award winning 'Nowhere Boys', in which he is credited as Jordie Race-Coldrey. Jordie was born in Melbourne, and is 21 years old.

This all-day event WILL NOT be streamed or recorded. If you want to join us, you will only be able to do so in person.

Will this event be catered?
Catering will not be provided for at this event, so please ensure you plan ahead of time. We will be providing a lunch break, and invite you to bring your own food or indulge in one of the many eateries nearby.

How much is parking?
If you park in Banks and Park Streets on the day of the event, parking will be free!
