Old-Time Backyard Bliss with Porch Couch (CAN) & Jono B Smith

Doors at 6pm. Music at 6:30pm followed by an Old-Time Session so bring your instruments! What a vibe for a spring eve :D

Alan Mackie and Jaron Freeman-Fox are Porch Couch, reanimating old-time and square dance tunes from Appalachia and beyond on fiddle and banjo, deftly balancing a deep respect for tradition against all the times they've shirked it: throat singing with Norwegians in a Siberian yurt camp, modern dancers leaping across tables at the PWYC bar gig, or playing for Swedish ravers under the midnight sun while the drummer bangs pool cues on the floor. Wry, colourful, and psychedelic, Porch Couch is an original sound in traditional music that moves listeners and dancers alike.

Jono B Smith is no stranger to the locals, being a songwriter from sunny-ole Newcastle and seen on the reg with bands such as Midnight Chicken. He writes with a mishmash of different styles and his songs range from intense and heartfelt to easy-going and comedic. Influenced by the guitar-woven songwriting of John Martyn, Joni Mitchell, Jerry Reed and George Harrison, his meandering, scenic pieces will lead you on a soulful journey or, at worst, be the perfect soundtrack to a deserved, dreamy nap.
