Special guest speaker: Yolanda de Valle-Buetefuer, The Circular Village.

Yolanda de Valle-Buetefuer is the founder of the Circular Village, bringing over 20 years in the fashion industry to help realise a vision of a fair, kind and circular fashion industry.

The fashion and textile industry is responsible for up to 10% of global carbon emissions as well as being a significant source of water use and waterway pollution. Manufactured garments are made and discarded at an alarming rate, with manufacturing techniques often utilising highly toxic chemicals that are harmful to workers and local environments. Discarded garments often end up in landfill due to limited textile recycling streams where they continue to release microplastics and other toxins into their surroundings.

While working in fashion Yolanda began to question the poor environmental practices in the industry. Realising there was plenty of room for improvement, Yolanda used science communication techniques to work with industry partners to change the way things were done, to move away from greenwashing and consider the environmental impacts of fashion manufacturing. An inspiring story of grass roots change, Yolanda has founded sustainable fashion events around Australia, recently relocating to Adelaide and starting the discussion about building good practice in our local fashion industry.

Yolanda will speak to us about her passion for sustainable fashion, how she has developed a suite of tools to support a transition to a more environmentally friendly industry and her work supporting local businesses to use circular business practices and encourage consumers to be mindful of sustainability when making fashion choices.

Plus there will be plenty of time for questions.
